Daniel in the Lion's Den

October 2004 – Dr Rosy Daniel, Director of Health Creation and former Medical Director of the Bristol Cancer Help Centre sparked a media row last week by going public with an announcement of her cancer successes using an unlicensed Indian herbal medicine, Carctol.

As important as it is to bring vital hope to those with cancer and to catalyse research for new alternative cancer treatments, Dr Daniel stresses that the real pressing issue when it comes to cancer is the fact that it has reached epidemic proportions in the United Kingdom, but almost nothing is being done to prevent one of the most killer diseases of the 21st century.

Dr Daniel is horrified that there are 270,000 new cases of cancer and around one million people currently living with cancer in the UK. This disturbing figure represents one fiftieth of the entire UK population. There are also approximately 200,000 deaths from cancer and currently one in three UK residents will get cancer in their lifetime and one in four will die from cancer. (1)

At the Cancer 2025 Think Tank seminar that was attended by 50 leading cancer experts (including Dr Daniel) last autumn, prophecies were made that the incidence of cancer will treble by the year 2025. However, the focus of this group was entirely on how to plan for that eventuality, not prevent it.

Dr Daniel is outraged by the passivity of the cancer care community and government, in relation to the ineffectiveness of cancer medicine. After 50 years of cancer research and the spending of billions on drug research, only three of the rarer cancers can be cured by cancer medicine (testicular cancer, some lymphomas and some leukaemia’s), whilst for the common cancers (lung, colon, prostate and breast) conventional treatment has remained largely impotent.

Whilst researching her Cancer Prevention Book (Simon and Schulster 2000), Dr Daniel learnt from Sir Richard Doll (leading cancer epidemiologist for Cancer Research UK), that cancer is at least 81.5% lifestyle related (35% by bad diet, 30% by smoking, 5% by alcohol, 10% by excess female hormones and 1.5% by lack of exercise).

Meanwhile, Cancer Research UK spends less than 4% of its annual budget on cancer prevention and The Department of Health pours billions into healthcare rather than prevention.

Dr Daniel is working with the new charity CANCERactive to lobby for change and the lowering of cancer risk from the many known causes of cancer. She is also working in the community offering Investors in Health Award for all those wishing to create a Health Creation environment within their organisation by use of her Health Creation Programme. Individuals can use the programme with the coaching of a Health Creation Mentor to guide and motivate them step by step to eliminate their cancer risk.

Dr Daniel’s message is simple, “We all need to wake up and stop being so passive about the cancer crisis, which is rapidly spreading to developing countries as western lifestyle is adopted.

“We have over 50 years of intense and expensive research and yet we have still failed to solve the cancer problem. Let us now shift our focus to the solution and generate the political and individual will to make cancer history,” Dr Daniel said.
